Hygiene in manicure and pedicure: what to look for in a salon

In nail care the risk is invisible and delayed. A few things to check before you sit down, and why the single-use kit gets talked about so much.

Short answer

The real risk in manicure and pedicure comes not from visible dirt but from tools already used on the previous client — and symptoms usually appear only days later. The most concrete thing to check: are porous items that cannot be fully cleaned — the file, the orange stick, the brush — opened new for each client? At Modern Hair Beauty Salon (Muratpaşa, Antalya) a sealed, personal single-use kit is opened for every client, and those items are never shared. A procedure that draws blood is not a normal part of nail care.

Why you cannot see it

A salon can look spotless: shiny floor, folded towels. But in nail care the route of transmission is not visible dirt, it is the surface of the tool. Porous materials such as files and buffers do not release what has soaked into them, even after a wipe with disinfectant. That is why such items are treated as single-use everywhere; “we washed it” is not an adequate answer.

Four things to check before you sit down

  1. Is the kit opened in front of you?A sealed pack opened in front of you is the only visible proof that the item is yours. A file pulled from an open drawer proves nothing.
  2. How are the metal tools stored?Metal tools can be sterilised. Asking what process they go through is your right; if you cannot get a clear answer, that is an answer too.
  3. How is the pedicure bowl prepared? There should be a single-use liner or a genuine clean after every client. In foot care this is the step most often skipped.
  4. If it bleeds, stopCutting the skin is not a normal part of the job. It is both an infection risk and a sign of an over-aggressive technique.

How it works here

A sealed, personal care kit is opened for every client: the file, orange stick and brush come from that kit and are shared with no one. This was the salon's own decision and it carries a cost; it was kept anyway. The same approach applies on the massage side — sheets, towels and products are opened from individual sterile packs.

FAQ

Can I bring my own file?

You can, but there is no need: the kit is opened for you anyway, and you are welcome to take it with you afterwards.

Do nail extensions damage the nail?

The damage usually comes not from the application but from removal: pulling off a product that has started to lift takes the nail surface with it. Having removal done in the salon is the safest route.

Do you offer manicure and pedicure for men?

Yes. Male guests get the same service and the same single-use kit; just choose manicure or pedicure when booking.

Let's decide in conversation first, not in the chair

You can book even if you are not sure yet — the consultation is part of the appointment and is not charged separately.
