What do 2D, 5D and 10D mean? The logic of choosing lash volume
In lash extensions the number is not a preference but a limit. How the volume your own lashes can carry is decided, and what to say at the appointment.

Short answer
2D, 5D and 10D describe how many fine lashes are placed in the fan attached to one natural lash: 2D-3D reads natural, 5D-6D is everyday but visible, 8D-10D is the most dramatic. Which one is possible is decided not by taste but by how dense and strong your own lashes are — too heavy a fan on a fine lash increases the risk of shedding. What is the number counting?
Extensions are applied one at a time: onto a single natural lash of yours, either one synthetic lash or a fan made of several fine ones is attached. The “D” is the number of lashes in that fan. 2D means two, 6D six, 10D ten. As the count rises, each lash gets finer — otherwise the total weight goes past what your own lash can hold.
Three tiers, three purposes
- 2D-3D — natural volume. It reads as your own lashes rather than as extensions. Also the safest range for fine, sparse lashes.
- 5D-6D — everyday but visible. It defines the eye even without makeup; this is usually the most requested range.
- 8D-10D — the most dramatic result. For a wedding, a shoot, a special evening. Whether your own lashes can carry it must be checked.
The choice is made by your lashes, not your taste
A natural lash carries only so much weight. Past that limit it can shed early — and then extensions get remembered as “the thing that ruined my lashes”. In most cases the problem is not the product but the tier. That is why your lashes are examined before application here, and why a tier below the one you asked for is sometimes suggested. That is not a sales decision; it is about what you see in the mirror two months later.
Fills and aftercare
A natural lash sheds and regrows on its own cycle, and the extension goes with it. Fills are therefore usually needed every few weeks; the interval varies from person to person. In between, avoiding oil-based makeup removers, rubbing your eyes and lash curlers makes them last longer. If your own cycle is fast, that is not your fault — it simply means more frequent fills.
FAQ
Do extensions damage my own lashes?
Generally not, if the right tier is chosen and the lash is not overloaded. Damage usually comes from weight, poor bonding, or pulling extensions off. That is why the tier is agreed before application and removal is done in the salon.
Lash lifting or extensions?
A lift raises and curls your own lashes; it adds no length and needs no upkeep. Extensions add length and volume but require fills. If your own lashes are long enough, a lift is often the lower-maintenance route.
How long before a wedding should I have it done?
Not on the wedding morning. A few days ahead lets the adhesive settle fully and leaves time to act if any unexpected sensitivity appears.
